Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, "Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting, Who will bear the sheaves away?" Loud and long the master calls you; Rich reward he offers free. Who will answer, gladly saying, "Here am I. Send me, send me"?

HOMILY THEME: YOU SHALL BE REWARDED

(Lk. 12:39-48) Wednesday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds His disciples to be always prepared to account before the Lord. That will come at an unexpected day. Thus, like a servant who is responsible while his master is out, he will be rewarded. But if he is irresponsible, he will be answerable to God. At times we forget the many gifts God had given us. We are more aware of what we do not have.
It is unbecoming of us to do so. It is as if God had not been good and a God to us. The truth is, He had given us so much. As human beings, we have a great capacity to love, to forgive, to understand, to care, to learn, etc. We only need to find these capacities. When we find them, we use them in accordance with God’s purpose. They were given to us not for us to decide how it is to be used. They were given in service of the community we belong. In the end, God will account us for these gifts.
It will be a big mistake to keep our gifts to ourselves. Selfishness has no room in a Christian’s heart. If we look at the human body; the hands, eyes, ears, lips, and other parts, they are meant not to serve ourselves but others. We were created by God to reach out, to communicate, and to connect with others. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbours as ourselves. It is a testimony to who we are and what we should become. God meant a world of people loving and caring for each other. When we share ourselves, we fulfill God’s purpose.
We were given gifts according to our capacities. We should not be jealous of others in the same way that others should not be jealous of us. Our charisms were meant to compliment each other.
Thus, some are prophets, teachers, priests, doctors, farmers, engineers, garbage collectors, caregivers, etc. Before God’s eyes, we are all equal because the gifts were proper to us.
Let us focus on the gifts we have. Use them for God’s greater glory. And when we face God, we can proudly tell Him we have used the gifts You have given in accordance with Your will!
