14TH THURSDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: RELYING SOLELY ON GOD’S PROVIDENCE

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Hosea 11:1-4, 8-9; Psalm 79(80):2-7; Matthew 10:7-15

In today’s gospel reading (Matthew 10:7–15), Jesus sends out his twelve apostles to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven. He instructs them to preach, to heal, and to drive out demons. He tells them to take nothing for the journey—no gold, silver, or copper in their belts. He wants them to rely solely on God’s providence.

Saint Benedict, whose memorial we celebrate today, echoes the instructions of Jesus in his Rule. He writes, “Poverty is a virtue, but it is not the only one. Chastity, obedience, and humility are also essential.” For Saint Benedict, the monastic life is a journey, a pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Heaven. He knows that the journey requires detachment from worldly goods and attachment to God alone.

Jesus’ commands to the apostles are also orders to us. Jesus calls us to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven in our daily lives. He calls us to rely on His providence and trust in His goodness and mercy. He calls us to live simply, humbly, and charitably.

But what does it mean to live simply, humbly, and charitably? It means living without attachment to worldly goods, without pride and arrogance, and with compassion and love for others. It means to live like Saint Benedict, who renounced wealth and status to follow Jesus.

Even if we do not receive a call to the monastic life, we can all emulate Saint Benedict. We can all renounce our attachment to worldly goods, our pride, and arrogance, and our selfish desires. We can all follow Jesus, proclaiming the Kingdom of Heaven in our daily lives.

Let us pray for the grace to follow Jesus, to proclaim the Kingdom of Heaven, and to live simply, humbly, and charitably. Let us ask God to help us to rely on his providence and trust in his goodness and mercy. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
