15TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD, SOURCE OF LIFE

BY: Fr Joseph Nyarko Asare

Isaiah 38:1-6,21-22,7-8/Psalm: Isaiah 38:10-12,16/Matthew 12:1-8

God is the master of all laws, including His own laws. Nothing restricts God, not even His own utterances. A remarkable and predictable trait of God is that He is powerfully merciful. He seeks life for all creatures, especially His loyal children. Today, we see how God impacts life through His generous love.
In the first reading, King Hezekiah who was due to die pleaded for mercy and his request was granted on the spot. Hezekiah whose father, King Ahaz, never respected the word of God, receives God’s word and whole heartedly and respectfully obeys it immediately by seeking for a change. Beyond his previous acts of kindness and devotion, Hezekiah exhibited both humility and trust in God.

In the Gospel, Jesus takes the disciples to the source of food. They were hungry and the master granted them an opportunity to eat and get satisfied. This was displeasing to the religious authorities but Jesus defended them.
Note that Isaiah was “humiliated” in the first reading in favour of King Hezekiah. God made the prophet change the content of a prophecy within minutes as if the prophet had initially given an information that was not credible. In the Gospel, a law the authority guarded so dearly was sidelined in favour of preserving life. We see God, ignoring existing principles to save lives. This is how God works: our lives matter so much to Him.
