16TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: “LET US PRAISE ILLUSTRIOUS MEN AND WOMEN…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Eccl 44:10-15; Psalm 131(132):11, 13-14, 17-18; Matt 13:16-17

Saints Joachim and Anne; Pray for Us!

What a joy and privilege to be parents and grandparents, especially when we realize how much many others longed to see and experience that blessing and they never did. It is a privilege that demands gratitude, when especially one’s progeny has projected and preserved the good and glorious treasures of the family tree and name. Jesus’ grandparents, Joachim and Anne, remain proud in heaven today, of their daughter and grandson, Mary and Jesus. That is because of what God did in the lives of the child and grandchild. The joy of grandparents is in the growth of their children and grandchildren, no doubt. When, however, true greatness manifests in the lives of these progenies as in the lives of Mary and Jesus, the joy is even greater and more sublime. Here, the joy is eternal because that greatness is in the things of God.

The first reading reminds us that legacy is very important. For children and grandchildren, today calls for self-examination. How much joy do you bring your parents and grandparents? Are you part of the grief that they suffer endlessly? Do they suffer neglect, hunger, ill-health, lack of proper housing and indignity, while you languish in affluence and surplus, only to declare big parties and burial ceremonies when they die? When was the last time you saw, visited or spoke with your aging parents and grandparents? They bore with you when you were a child, sucked up your mess and laughed even at the most ridiculous of things. Now that they are becoming more childlike, sometimes childish, as a result of age, are you reciprocating their love and patience with you? I hear of children and grandchildren beating up parents and grandparents. Why are you incurring an eternal curse on yourself? Parents and grandparents are God’s gifts to us. If you are lucky to have any, cherish them, love them, care for them and be thankful for them. Happy Grandparents and Elders day (weekend) to all our grannies and elders. God bless you all.

Lord, bless our parents and grandparents with lasting joy and happiness, through the intercessions of Saints Joachim and Anne. Amen.
