16TH TUESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “MY MOTHER AND MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS ARE ANYONE WHO DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Micah 7:14-15, 18-20; Psalm 84(85):2-8-9; Matt 12:46-50
At the end of the two chapters that detailed the lack of the proper response to the good news and the opposition and rebellion led by the scribes and the Pharisees, Jesus makes a declaration to separate that opposition and rebellion from true obedience to God. That declaration also defined Jesus’ true family, his true mother, brothers and sisters, in opposition to those who lay mere biological claim to him without committing to the demands of the good news, the same group that would reject him at the end of the next section, when he went to his hometown in Nazareth in Matt 13:54-58.

To be truly connected to Jesus is to live in total obedience to God, doing the Father’s will in all things. His mother, and our mother, Mary, leads us in that regard (“let it be done according to your will,” Luke 1:38). To be Jesus’ disciples, those whom he identified as his family in today’s gospel by pointing to them, therefore, is to live according to, and doing, God’s will. Jesus exemplifies God’s will for us. To live like Jesus, as Jesus taught us, in obedience to his word and commandment of love, walk in his footsteps, and follow his way of life, is to do God’s will. In today’s first reading, the prophet offers a prayer that attests to God’s loving mercy at the end of his prophecy. Counting on God’s covenantal love and mighty deeds amongst His people in the past, despite their infidelity, the prophet asked God anew for mercy, forgiveness and restoration for his generation. We claim this plea to God for ourselves, our families, our communities and our world today, as we continue to wallow in darkness, that God would have mercy upon us and restore us to His favor and glory.
Merciful Father, living in the midst of a rebellious world, we pray; pardon us, have pity on us and throw away our sins; grant us your faithfulness and mercy and give us the courage to live according to Your divine will. Amen.
