16TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “BEFORE I FORMED YOU IN THE WOMB, I KNEW YOU…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Jeremiah 1:1,4-10, Psalm 71:1-6,15,17, Matthew 13:1-9
We begin reading the Prophet Jeremiah today, with the narrative on the call of Jeremiah to prophetic ministry. Although Jeremiah objected to his call and would continue to do so, either on the basis of unworthiness or not having the required skills, the Lord insisted that divine choice does not go wrong because the one chosen will be accompanied by the Sender. So, God simply reassures him: “do not be afraid, for a I am with you to protect you…”

Jeremiah had a very difficult life and ministry, but the Lord was, indeed, with him all through. We too were all known to God, even before we were born. If God has chosen any for a mission or role in life, no matter how unworthy we feel, we must trust that the God who chose and sent will also provide the necessary aid needed to accomplish his mission. That does not mean that we would not encounter difficulties and challenges. But, amidst our trials, God remains with and walks with us. So, we must live and carry out that mission courageously. It is in that regard that today’s gospel speaks to us. In the parable of the Sower, only the fourth sowing accomplished its mission. A fruitless life is an abuse of God’s goodness and grace, and not worth living. Why did God make you? Why did God put you where you are at this time? What is the purpose of your life? These are questions that must be answered daily by our words, works and actions. We may not yield fruits in equal measure to others, but God expects fruitfulness from our lives according to the roles and capacities that He has bestowed on us. Life is God’s gift to us; what we do with it and the fruits we yield are our gifts to God.
Lord, help me to bear the fruits of everlasting life. Amen.
