17TH TUESDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GROWING AS WHEAT IN A WORLD OF WEEDS

BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa

Jeremiah 14:17-22, Ps. 79:8-9,11,13, Matthew 13:36-43

The parable of the wheat and the weeds (Matthew 13:36–43) tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like a field where both wheat and weeds grow together. The wheat represents the children of God, while the weeds symbolize the children of the evil one. God, the owner of the field, permits both to coexist until harvest time, when he separates and burns the weeds while gathering the wheat into the barn.

Think about the city of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm brought out the worst in some, with looting and violence, but it also brought out the best in others, with countless acts of kindness, generosity, and heroism.

Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana on August 29, 2005, causing catastrophic damage and flooding in New Orleans and surrounding areas. The storm resulted in over 1,800 deaths and $125 billion in damages, making it one of the deadliest and costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

God could have stopped the storm right away, but instead, He allowed good and evil to coexist for a time. This means that people who risked their lives to rescue others lived alongside those who took advantage of the chaos. It might seem confusing, but God’s wisdom and patience are at work here.

God is giving everyone time to make choices and live their lives, even if those choices are harmful. But ultimately, God will bring justice and separate good from evil. This is a hard concept to understand, but it’s a reminder that God is in control, even when we can’t see it.

This implies that we must learn how to navigate a complex world where good and evil coexist. We must learn how to be patient, trust in God’s timing, and concentrate on growing as strong as wheat instead of trying to eradicate the weeds.

It also means that we must be careful not to judge others or try to separate the wheat from the weeds ourselves. That’s God’s job, not ours. Our task is to live as children of God, to grow in holiness and love, and to trust that God will sort everything out in the end.

Let us embrace the parable of wheat and weeds growing together as a call to patience, trust, and growth, and may we find peace in knowing that God is in control, even when we can’t see it. Amen.
