19TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: TWO BECOME ONE

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

Ezek 16:1-15, 60, 63; Psalm (Isaiah 12); Matt 19:3-12

Wise people say, “A happy man marries the girl he loves, but a happier man loves the girl he marries.” This implies that the happiest person is one who continues to love their spouse through every condition of life.

The Pharisees held a flawed understanding of marriage, seeing it as a contract that could be easily dissolved. Jesus challenged this view by reminding them of the original divine intent for marriage: “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one'” (Matthew 19:4-5). Jesus emphasized that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman, with a focus on unity. He did not say that three, four, five, or six people become one flesh, but rather that the two become one flesh.

The Church teaches that the two essential properties of marriage are *Unity* and *Indissolubility*. Unity means that in marriage, the husband and wife become one, and Indissolubility means that they form an unbreakable bond that lasts throughout their life, a bond that no one can dissolve. The stronger their relationship with God, the stronger their union becomes.

Do we remember the saying, “A family that prays together stays together?”
