HOMILY THEME: COMMITMENT—THE FRAMEWORK OF LIFE
BY: Fr. Obinna Ezeaputa
Ezek 16:1-15, 60, 63; Psalm (Isaiah 12); Matt 19:3-12
Today, we celebrate the memorial of Saint Stephen of Hungary, a king who built his life on commitment, service, and love. His life serves as a reminder that our own commitments can guide us in creating a life that is truly meaningful and filled with purpose, meaning, and greatness.

In today’s gospel (Matthew 19:3–12), Jesus teaches us about the importance of lifelong commitment in marriage. He reminds us that marriage is a sacred bond between two people, united in love and commitment. However, this teaching extends beyond marriage. It’s about our commitment to God and our neighbors. Saint Stephen of Hungary exemplified this commitment in his own life.
He united his life with God’s will, becoming a true servant leader. He established a system of hospitals and orphanages throughout his kingdom, caring for the most vulnerable members of society. He also promoted the spread of Christianity, establishing bishoprics and monasteries, and encouraging the work of missionaries.
But Saint Stephen’s commitment went beyond just his public actions. He was also a devoted husband and father, and his marriage to Saint Gisela was a testament to the power of lifelong commitment, reflecting the Catholic Church’s teaching on the indissolubility of marriage (CCC 1644).
Through all the ups and downs, Stephen and Gisela stuck together, raised their kids in the Catholic faith, and supported each other’s dreams. Their relationship was based on mutual respect, trust, and love, and they had a large, loving family. They showed us that when we make a lifelong commitment, it’s not just about the good times but about standing by each other through everything.
As we celebrate the memorial of Saint Stephen of Hungary, let us ask ourselves: What commitments are we making to God, to our faith, and to one another? Are we living with the same dedication and love that Saint Stephen showed? Are we using our positions, talents, and resources to serve others and build up God’s kingdom?
Just like a masterpiece painting requires a strong frame to hold it together, our commitments in life provide the framework for a beautiful picture of love, service, and devotion. May our lives be a work of art that reflects God’s love and beauty, just as Saint Stephen’s life was a masterpiece of commitment and service. May we find inspiration to craft a life brimming with faith, hope, and love. Amen.
