19TH SUNDAY HOMILY FOR THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “COURAGE! IT IS I! DO NOT BE AFRAID.”

1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:22-33

Both here and in the post-resurrection appearances, the disciples did not recognize Jesus until he spoke. Their vision was blurred. Why? Fear, stress, intimidation and uncertainties blur spiritual vision, making it difficult to pray properly. Doubt and despair set in. Yet, the words of Christ: “do not be afraid,” are the best remedy for such times. Fear paralyses and discourages us and frustrate our efforts. Knowing that Jesus is always with us reawakens our courage and trust that he never abandons us. Rather, he walks through the storm, in the storm, toward us. Like Elijah, we should always return to God in our troubles, though His presence is sometimes unrecognized.

Let us hone our vision by being more spiritually attentive at such times. Then, we will encounter His power and support in the “sound of the gentle breeze.” So, never give in to the spiritual dulling of your faith in times of sickness, bereavement, and life’s many challenges. When the tempest rages the loudest, that is when we need to be more attuned to the voice of the Good Shepherd. He always calls his disciples from fear to courage and strength. Just stretch out your hand and cry out prayerfully: “Lord, save me.”

Lord, shepherd us through the storms of our daily trials. Amen.
