19TH SUNDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME: YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: BE PREPARED!

Wisdom 18:6-9, Hebrews 11:1-2.8-19, Luke 12:32-48

Last Sunday, we were admonished on the need to focus on eternal life rather than vanity. Today, Christ reminds us that the Lord’s coming is unpredictable and as such we need to be prepared so as not to be caught unawares.

In the first and second readings, we see the steadfastness of God which lasts forever. God delivered the Israelites from tyranny and oppression when all hope seemed to be lost. Abraham hoped and believed in God, and he was rewarded for his faith. He was ready to do all God commanded. He was prepared always to do God’s will. As evident in his life, those who are always committed to do God’s will never lack blessings. They may suffer for a moment, but they are assured of eternal life.

In the gospel, Jesus Christ tells us that the hour of the Lord’s coming is unpredictable. The best moment to prepare to meet the Lord is now. Going further, Jesus reminds us that the best way for this preparation is by doing and being good always. When we are charitable, carry out our duty conscientiously, and live a virtuous life, we do not need to panic about the coming of the Lord.

Beloved in the Lord, there have been many predictions about the end of the world. The predictions are still ongoing. Many interpret the recent wars and persecutions across the world as signs of the end of times. Like Christ reminds us today, however, there is no need to bother ourselves about the time the Lord will come. The important thing rather is that we get prepared for that day.

Christ comes to us daily in our homes and workplaces. If we allow peace and love to reign in our families and treat those around us with love and respect, we are prepared to meet the Lord. Christ comes to us in the Eucharist which is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. We should strive and prepare ourselves not just to receive him daily, but also to receive him in the state of grace.

As we strive to live a fulfilled life, may God help us to always remember to prepare to die a fulfilled death. When we are so prepared for a good life and a perfect end, we transform the world with our habitual good deeds, and prepare ourselves for eternal union and happiness with God.
