1ST FRIDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “We must therefore do everything we can to reach this place of rest…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Heb 4:1-5, 11; Psalm 77(78):3-4, 6-8; Mark 2:1-12
Our ultimate place of rest is heaven. Jesus gives us multiple instructions on how to get there. The letter to the Hebrews encourages us today to take those injunctions seriously. We must, therefore, heed Jesus’ warning concerning the narrow and small way that leads to life and work hard to find it, because the easier and wider road leads to destruction (Matt 7:13-14).

Today’s gospel underlines the wholesomeness of Jesus’ healings. With the paralytic, the spiritual healing came before the physical healing, which became proof to the people of the spiritual component as well as of God’s presence in Jesus. We must also note the importance of faith and intercessory prayer. The healing came through the faith of those who bore the paralytic; that they took responsibility for the plight of the paralytic is instructive to us. Our neighbor’s pain/plight is our responsibility. Like the men, our faith can bring others to Jesus through constant prayer and encounters. And we must also bring Christ to others. Lastly, Jesus has given the words he spoke to the paralytic, “your sins are forgiven you,” to the church so we may hear them and experience forgiveness even today. Let us take advantage of them by faithfully frequently approaching the sacrament of reconciliation.
Lord, forgive us our sins and make us whole. Amen.
