1ST FRIDAY HOMILY OF THE ADVENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “SON OF DAVID, HAVE PITY ON US”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isa 29:17-24; Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14; Matt 9:21, 27-31

Today’s liturgy proclaims the awesome blessings that accompany the Messiah’s presence, including restoration of sight, hearing, and right order, and the eradication of evil and injustice. Jesus’ healing of the blind men directly reveals his Messianic identity, as he responded to their plea.

In Christ, the promises of old come to fruition and God’s people are freed from enslavement to the powers of the evil one. They are restored to friendship with God, reestablishing unity between God and humanity through Christ. That union brings us into God’s light and saving grace, freedom from the darkness of physical and temporal ailments as well as from spiritual and eternal danger. I often wonder about the blind faith of these men in response to the question: “do you believe I can do this?” People with sight saw Jesus and his mighty works but did not perceive the Messianic manifestations in Christ and remained faithless. Many rejected him. Without physical sight, these ones still knew that Jesus was the Christ, that is, Son of David. They acted boldly on that knowledge and regained both physical and spiritual sight. Many of us think we see, but we are actually blind: lacking perception and true faith; enslaved by insensitivity, indifference and self-centeredness.

Lord, heal our blindness; open our eyes to see your face in the world and people around us. Amen.
