(a) The Advent season is there again. It is a holy season of ca. 4 Weeks which prepares us waiting for the coming of Christ, our redeemer. The readings of this season are rich with words which call us “to be ready”, “to await” “to be vigilant”

(b) The Gospel of this first Sunday of Advent speaks of the signs appearing in the moon, in the sun and on the stars. It talked about fears that will grip the earth. It talks about difficulties people may experience. Amid all these, it tells us; “when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.”

(c) What are the signs of the time? Advent calls us to be aware of the signs of the time. We may be going through difficulties times. Advent teaches us to raise our heads high and never to give up. The colour of the season, violet speaks of the sign of the time. It tell us that something great is about happening, namely, that “redemption is at Hand”. The signs of the the season, the colour, the weather, the shopping, the liturgy awaken in us a spiritual hope. Advent teaches us to hope, expect and WAIT for this great thing about to happen. Waiting on the Lord is a virtue with is healing in itself. The act of waiting on the Lord fills one with great strength. People who have the Advent-virtues WAIT that the will of God be fulfilled in their lives. They wait on the Lord every minute of their life and the Redeemer comes every second. He is at hand.

In this hope with light the first candle of the season.
