1ST SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME (BAPTISM OF THE LORD) — YEAR C

HOMILY THEME: BE INITIATED!

BY: Fr. Oselumhense Anetor

Isaiah 40:1-5,9-11/ Titus 2:11-17; 3:4-7/Luke 3:15-16,21-22

It’s Jesus’ baptism today. There’s nothing so new about Jesus’ baptism. We were told this story over and over again when we were still kids in our catechism and Sunday school classes. We know that Jesus wasn’t in need of baptism. He had no sin. We know that John initially objected to Him. We know that Jesus did this to fulfill all righteousness. These are all scriptural facts. However, not everyone is able to draw the needed lessons from this act of Jesus at the river Jordan.

Friends, let’s not forget that although Jesus had been pointed out by John as the Lamb of God, there were many who as yet didn’t know who He was or what He had come to do. In today’s gospel reading, the Father and the Holy Spirit are present to confirm Jesus’s mission and ministry at his baptism. In baptism, we too are initiated into a new life with Christ. The old dies, and the new begins. God becomes our Father, and we become the sheep of his flock. In baptism, we’re reborn and renewed in the Holy Spirit. We must therefore learn to wash ourselves clean in the waters of purification as we let go of earthly pleasures and sin. We can do this by re-enacting our baptismal promises and by sacramental confession.

Happy Sunday dear. Have a wonderful Week of Ordinary Time ahead.
