1ST THURSDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: DISCOMFORT IN SERVING OTHERS

BY: Fr Ernest Cross

Mk 1:40-45

During the time of Jesus, lepers were not allowed to live within the community. They were considered untouchable and were isolated from others. In today’s gospel, a leper courageously approached Jesus and asked to be healed. Jesus, moved by compassion, granted his request. He touched the supposedly untouchable and healed him.

After healing the leper, Jesus immediately sent him away with a stern warning: “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing as prescribed by Moses, as evidence of your recovery.”

Despite Jesus’ instructions, the leper began openly and widely sharing news of his healing, which went against Jesus’ wishes. As a result, Jesus had to stay in remote locations where no one lived.

In other words, after providing healing, Jesus experienced the leper’s loneliness. He sacrificed his own comfort for the sake of others. Serving others can sometimes drain us, and we may feel tempted to retreat. However, Jesus’ example encourages us to continue serving, trusting that in God’s time, we will be blessed for our efforts.

God bless you.
