1ST TUESDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

1ST TUESDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Heb 2:5-12; Psalm 8:2, 5-9; Mark 1:21-28
As we move into liturgical Ordinary Time, we have an opportunity to celebrate the outcomes of God’s decision to become one of us in Christ Jesus. The goal of that move is at the heart of today’s first reading. For our sake, God subjected his Son to suffering and the human condition. He came into total solidarity with us in order to sanctify and redeem our nature, through his ultimate sacrifice on the cross. The work of redeeming humanity became Jesus’ preoccupation right from the beginning of his ministry; freeing humanity from all that binds and subdues it, physically and spiritually.

Today’s gospel celebrates his power over evil forces as he cast out an unclean spirit from a possessed person, and underscores his redemptive mission and presence amongst us. He continued it in many other ways until his ultimate victory over death, in order to bring us the gift of eternal life. Often, humans function as evil agents by been part of the oppressive structures that subdue and dehumanize fellow humans. Let us join Jesus in the battle against these indignities by working for the authentic dignity of all, especially those around us.
Lord, deliver us from every evil. Amen.
