1ST WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “On this mountain the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples…”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Isa 25:6-10; Psalm 22(23):1-6; Matt 15:29-37

Isaiah brings us another Advent message of hope and restoration today with God’s provision of a rich banquet at which all peoples are nourished. Together with that nourishment are the gifts of consolation, peace, strength to the weak, joy, gladness, salvation, life and much more.

Isaiah’s prophesy is fulfilled, in part, in the gospel reading as Jesus nourished the multitude spiritually with his teaching and fed them physically, gave hope and nourishment to the poor, healed the sick, and satisfied their hunger in every respect. His presence is sufficiency itself. For us, Jesus is the promised Messiah-shepherd, who lays down His life for us anew at every Eucharist, nourishing us with compassion, tenderness, love and sufficiency. He is indeed our Good Shepherd. As we await the fullness of that prophesy’s fulfillment at the end of time, Advent invites us to be part of the ongoing fulfillment of that prophesy in our time. The hungry, sick, suffering poor, homeless, oppressed, and downtrodden are still very much with us. We must continue to be bearers of Jesus’ heart that was moved with pity, so that we may be actively involved in bringing solace to our brothers and sisters who suffer such ills today. We may think we do not have much to offer, just like the disciples in the gospel, but our willingness to share the little we have provides more than we can ever imagine. Just make it available and Jesus will take care of the increase. On the other hand, those who wallow in abundance and surplus must do much more, because, in God’s eyes, what they have in surplus belongs to the poor.
Today’s Advent Challenge: Check your wardrobe and home for all the clothing, shoes, and property that you have not used for such a long time. Bring them out. They belong to the poor. Also, ensure that you have a budget that is actively worked out to include charity to the poorest around you, so that you may put smiles on many faces this coming Christmas.

Lord, may your love for us overflow into our generosity to others. Amen.
