20TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: GOD AND NEIGHBOUR
BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa
Ezek 37:1-14; Psalm 106(107):2-9; Matt 22:34-40
“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20). Jesus summarized the entire Jewish law into two commandments: the love of God and the love of neighbour. The commandment to love God is derived from the famous Shema: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might” (Deuteronomy 6:4). The Shema emphasizes the unity of God and the obligation to love Him fully.

The commandment to love one’s neighbour comes from Leviticus 19:18: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” What makes Jesus’ teaching on love so unique is that He asks His followers not to discriminate against anyone, regardless of religion, race, tribe, or social class. No one should be considered a second-class human being because they practice a different religion or speak a different language. True religion does not promote any form of discrimination. Jesus teaches us that our love for God is incomplete unless we love and respect everyone, recognizing that all people are made in the image and likeness of God.
Can we see the image of God in everyone we meet?
