21ST FRIDAY HOMILY THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: STANDING FOR WHAT IS RIGHT

My dear beloved brothers and sisters,
Today we remember Saint John the Baptist, a man who showed us a hard truth: it’s not always easy to do what’s right. He stood up for God’s truth, and he was killed because of it.
The Gospel of Mark tells us what happened. A king named Herod had taken his brother’s wife, which was against God’s law. John the Baptist was brave enough to tell Herod, “It is wrong for you to have your brother’s wife.” This made the king’s wife, Herodias, very angry. She wanted to get rid of John.

During a party, she got her chance. She convinced the king to have John beheaded. John died because he spoke the truth.
This story makes us think of what God told the prophet Jeremiah. God told Jeremiah to be strong and not be afraid of what people might do or say. God said, “I will make you like a strong city, a bronze wall against everyone.”
This is the same strength John the Baptist had. He was not afraid of the king. He was like a strong wall of faith. He stood firm, not because he was fearless, but because he was following God’s command.
We may not have to face death for our beliefs, but we are all called to be like John. We are called to speak the truth in a world that often wants us to stay quiet. This could be in our families, at work, or with our friends. It could be as simple as telling a lie or as hard as speaking up about something that is unfair.
The easy thing to do is to be silent, to avoid trouble. But the story of John the Baptist teaches us that being silent can be a mistake. It can mean we are betraying the truth and betraying God, who gives us the strength to speak.
John’s death was not a defeat. It was a victory. He showed that a life lived for God is more important than anything else.
So today, let’s pray for the same courage Saint John the Baptist had. Let’s ask God to make us strong, so we can speak His truth, no matter the cost.
