22ND FRIDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: RATHER, NEW WINE MUST BE POURED INTO FRESH WINESKINS

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Luke 5:33-39

Today’s hymn (first reading) in praise of Christ and glory to God celebrates the origins, mission, destiny and victory of Christ, as well as the redemption wrought by him. This early Christological hymn reminds us that in Christ, we encounter and know God because God has made Himself available and visible to us through Jesus Christ. Similar to the prologues of John’s gospel and the letter to the Hebrews, creation is said to have its origin in him and, therefore, must remain subject to him; so also must every created force and power.

As source of life, he made eternal life available to us through his passion and resurrection, by reconciling us to the Father. Through the Church, his Body, he continues to sanctify creation so that all may be led into the peace of God’s kingdom. As members of his Body, the Church, he reminds us in today’s gospel that every encounter with God is transformative. We become a new creation through our relationship with God in Christ Jesus. We must, therefore, live accordingly; as children of God, brothers and sisters of Christ; children of the light. We must work with the Holy Spirit that is poured out upon us at baptism to move us away from our old ways into the light of God’s will. On this first Friday of the September, we unite ourselves with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and pray that he would make our hearts like unto his. We also celebrate the memorial of St. Teresa of Calcutta today. Let us imbibe her spirit of bringing dignity, respite, hope and relief to the poorest of the poor, and continue her work among the marginalized around us; in our family, Church and the larger society.

Lord, bring us to new life in Christ. Amen.
