22ND MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: STATE YOUR MISSION

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

1 Cor 2:1-5; Psalm 119:97-102; Luke 4:16-30

Remember the well-loved proverb that says, “When God wants to bless you, He gives you a mission.” This means the blessings of God often come in the form of a mission. God entrusts people with a specific task, duty, or role that contributes positively and makes a meaningful impact on the world. When God assigns a mission, He empowers, guides, supports, and strengthens the consecrated or anointed person.

The life of Jesus is a perfect example of a purpose-driven life. He knew who He was and had a clear idea of His mission. He stated His mission clearly: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Luke 4:18). He focused on the poor of spirit, those who were hungry for the word of God, and people who were willing to live the values of the Gospel.

We can participate in the mission of Jesus by proclaiming the good news, opening the eyes of the blind, helping to free all those in bondage, and extending the mercy of God. Can each of us write a mission statement in which we articulate the main reason for our existence, the core values and principles that guide our actions, our goals and objectives, and our target audience?
