22ND MONDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME…”

 BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

1 Thess 4:13-18; Psalm 95(96):1, 3-5, 11-13; Luke 4:16-30

We begin reading about the public ministry of the Lord Jesus according to Luke today. His opening statement in the Synagogue as he began his ministry spelt out the purpose of his life; life lived in service of the good news of the Kingdom and the good and salvation of all. He came to make God and God’s blessings present to humanity, especially to those with special difficulties in life. Following this, he would gather his disciples.

These he also commissioned to preach the same message that he preached and do the same things that he did, as extensions of his mission of making God present and known. When the Old Catechism asked the question: Why did God make you? The answer states the purpose of our lives; the same purpose outlined by Jesus. “God made me to know him, love him and serve him in this world, and to be happy with him forever in the next.” That is what Jesus calls us to do: love God above all else, serve God by our love for neighbor, and allow ourselves to be drawn into intimacy with him. That is also the vision outlined by Paul in the first reading as he discussed the resurrection of the dead to life with God in heaven.

Lord, bless us with your Spirit for the continuation of your work on earth. Amen.
