22ND SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “THE WAY YOU THINK IS NOT GOD’S WAY BUT MAN’S.”

Jer 20: 7-9, Ps. 63:2-6, 8-9, Rom 12:1-2, Matt 16:21-27

Discipleship follows an irresistible attraction by the master, yet its path is fraught with difficulties. Jeremiah identified that strong attraction as seduction; he vividly described the difficulties his response experienced in today’s first reading. Our zeal for the Lord comes with challenges. Peter quickly found that out after his confession. Despite the boost and affirmation that Peter got from Jesus, Jesus needed to balance that exciting confession by letting his disciples know that they must embrace the “Cross” with the “Christ.”

Many people desire a cross-less Christianity. Jesus notifies us that both Cross and Christ must go together, just as we had in Paul’s proclamation that our relationship is with “Christ crucified.” Such a disciple listens to St. Paul’s injunction today not to model our lives after the ways of the world. The demand is to think, speak, and act according to God’s ways. In Christ, we have a new mind, one that is totally God-oriented; so that we are able to discern and discover “the will of God and know what is good, what it is that God wants, what is the perfect thing to do.” This knowledge makes it possible for us to bear our crosses as we follow Jesus daily.

Lord, infuse us with your Spirit. Amen.
