22ND TUESDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “BE QUIET! COME OUT OF HIM!”

Today’s gospel presents an actualization of Jesus’ definition of his mission yesterday as his mere presence disturbed and destabilized the domain of the evil one. While not yielding to the flattering by the devil’s agents, he quickly restored order and dignity to those whose lives had hitherto been messed up by evil.

His authority over the powers of evil remains a constant source of support and restoration for believers. We only have to be more sincere in our confession of faith and not flatter God with lip service. The most powerful instrument we have in that regard is our union and intimacy with Jesus. United with him, his light fills our lives and the darkness of evil finds no home in us. Reminding us that we are children of light, St. Paul, in the first reading, urges us to keep that light constantly burning brightly. That is what Christian vigilance entails as we await the day of the Lord, to keep Christ in us. And because we are family, St. Paul also encourages us to help our brothers and sisters as we journey along. There is room for everyone in heaven, and the more we are, the merrier the celebration of life with God would be.
Lord, deliver us from the evil one. Amen.
