23RD FRIDAY HOMILY ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: “CAN A BLIND PERSON GUIDE A BLIND PERSON?”

BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido

Luke 6:39-42

Paul’s words today should encourage many, especially when we think about our past lives and feel unworthy of God’s grace. Paul reminds us: such moments are opportunities for gratitude to God for His mercies; opportunities to renew our loyalty and commitment to God. Hopefully, such moments should also bring us to better understand others’ weaknesses and appreciate their struggles in their spiritual journey.

Jesus reminds us in the gospel to be ever determined in our strife to be like him. A major part of being like Christ is to allow him be the point of reference in everything, while we humbly take the backstage, no matter how good we are. All that we do must bring glory to God and to Christ, and never to ourselves. In addition, our strife for holiness should open up our eyes to see how we can be positively and responsibly helpful to others in their spiritual journey. We must be watchful of our judgmental attitudes, lest we be like the brother with plank in the eye, trying to remove a splinter from another brother’s eye. In all, Christ wants us to give leadership, just as Paul prepared Timothy for leadership. But he urges us to prepare ourselves for such roles by making sincere efforts to be Christlike and charitable in our leadership. Today also celebrates the Most Holy Name of Mary, reminding us that a bond with her leads and sustains our path to her Son, in whose Holy Name we have salvation. Sanctified by her FIAT to God, “all generations will call her blessed,” who proclaims God’s own name as Holy. May her Name continue to be held holy by our filial adherence to the path of discipleship that she has paved for us by her humility, simplicity, chastity, generosity, obedience and holiness.

Open my eyes, O Lord; help me to see your face in all everyone I encounter. Amen.
