23RD SUNDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: LIVING FOR OTHERS!
BY: Fr Oselumhense Anetor
Isaiah 35:4-7, James 2:1-5, Mark 7:31-37
Today’s readings beautifully illustrate the ministry of service, emphasizing the call to uplift and restore others. In the first reading from Isaiah, God’s promise to open the eyes of the blind and unstop the ears of the deaf serves as a powerful reminder of His compassion and the transformative nature of divine intervention. This theme is echoed in the responsorial psalm, which highlights God as a protector of the marginalized, urging believers to trust in His providence.

Friends, St James challenges us in the second reading to live out our faith through actions, particularly in how we treat the poor, reinforcing that genuine faith is expressed through love and service to others. The Gospel of Mark further exemplifies this ministry of service through Jesus’ healing of a deaf and mute man. His personal and intimate approach to healing underscores the importance of engaging with individuals on a personal level, reflecting the heart of God’s mission. Pope Francis emphasizes that the life of Jesus is a life for others, calling the faithful to embody this spirit of service in our daily lives. Let us therefore reflect on our own lives and consider how we too can serve others, ultimately recognizing that in serving those in need, we are serving Jesus Christ Himself.
Happy Sunday!
