23RD THURSDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME; YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

Today, many of us suffer from a killer disease called grudgititis, which comes from holding on to grudges and keeping a multitude of enemies. An African proverb teaches us how to deal with our enemies: “If you are digging a pit for your enemy, don’t make it too deep, for you may fall into it.” When Saul pursued David with three thousand men, Abishai, David’s army commander, had the chance to kill Saul, but David stopped him.

King David gives us practical examples of love, forgiveness, and compassion. Jesus also changed the world with his revolutionary teaching about loving one’s enemies. He challenged a culture filled with vengeance and hatred. Jesus said to his disciples: “I say to you that hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also” (Luke 6:27–28).

But how possible is it to love bandits and kidnappers in Nigeria who are determined to steal, kill, and destroy? It is indeed difficult to show love, kindness, and compassion to people who vilify us, say unkind things, wish us harm, oppose us, work against our progress, or openly dislike us. Yet, the real question remains: What attitudes do we adopt towards our enemies and those who humiliate us?
