23RD TUESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “HE SPENT THE WHOLE NIGHT IN PRAYER TO GOD.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
1 Cor 6:1-11, Psalm 149:1-6a, 9b; Luke 6:12-19
The choice of the 12 apostles in Luke, following Jesus’ night of prayer, is the literary setting for the Sermon on the Plain, the Lucan equivalent of Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount, to present Jesus’ chosen ones as the primary audience of his proclamation of the kingdom. Jesus nourished them and many others by word and deed. Having been so nourished, they were to learn from Jesus, receive from him, be empowered by him, and in turn go out to nourish others by word and deed, under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit; thus bringing the good news of salvation to the ends of the earth. The one thing they must also have learnt from Jesus would be the importance of prayer in the life of a Christian. Jesus taught them that prayer is a way of life that brings the petitioner into constant communion with the Father in order to empower and rejuvenate the one praying for the journey ahead.

Through prayer, we make God part of our journey, with all its challenges and struggles. St. Paul reminds us today that just as Jesus is the light of the world, disciples must live as shining examples of God’s goodness in the world by their civility, love, understanding, mutual respect and integrity as Church. Individual disciples must strive for morally upright and just ways, shunning the deadly sins listed by Paul in his letter. The community must also conduct its affairs in such a way that the common good of all is justly ensured, while moderating the affairs and relationships within, so as not to cause scandal to the world or wash her dirty linens in the public. Let us stop bad-mouthing our communities on social media and always pray for the ongoing of renewal of God’s Church by the Holy Spirit.
Loving Father, in baptism, you washed us clean, justified us and sanctified us through the “Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and through Your Spirit,” please graciously preserve our identity as your children amidst our daily struggles. Amen.
