23RD WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: THE GREAT REVERSAL OF GOD’S KINGDOM

Colossians 3:1-11, Ps. 145:2-3, 10-11, Luke 6:20-26
“Blessed are you poor. Woe to you that are rich.”
Beloved in Christ, today’s Gospel (Luke 6:20-26) cuts through the illusions of this world like a two-edged sword. Jesus lifts His eyes upon His disciples—not upon the mighty rulers, not upon the wealthy elites, but upon the poor, the hungry, the broken, and the despised. And what does He say? “Blessed are you.” This is the divine reversal of heaven: those the world calls cursed, God calls blessed; those the world honours, God warns with woe. The message is unsettling, yet it is the heartbeat of the Kingdom—a Kingdom not built on gold or glory but on grace and eternal reward.

The Lord speaks directly into the pain of the human soul. To the poor, He promises a kingdom greater than empires. To the hungry, He pledges a satisfaction this world can not provide. To those who weep, He assures laughter that no sorrow can silence. And to those hated, excluded, and mocked for His name, He declares a reward that outshines every earthly crown. This is not empty comfort—it is heaven’s truth: suffering for Christ is not a mark of shame but a seal of glory.
Yet, Christ does not stop at blessing. He turns with holy fire to pronounce “Woe!”—a word of warning to the rich who trust in their wealth, the satisfied who feed only their bellies, the laughing who mock truth, and the praised who live for men’s applause. These are not casual words; they are divine alarms. Jesus reminds us that worldly comfort is temporary, worldly laughter is hollow, and worldly approval is fleeting. What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?
Beloved, the Gospel demands a choice. Will we cling to the fleeting comforts of this age, or will we embrace the eternal joy of the Kingdom? Will we live for the applause of men or for the smile of God? Today, Christ calls us to align our hearts with heaven, to rejoice in trials, to find hope in suffering, and to live not for what perishes but for what endures forever. For the Kingdom of God belongs not to the self-sufficient, but to those who hunger for Him. So lift up your eyes, children of God—your tears are not wasted, your hunger will be filled, and your faith will be crowned with eternal joy. GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE.
