24TH TUESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GOD’S COMPASSION & MIGHT

BY: Bishop Gerald M. Musa

1 Cor 12: 12 – 31, Lk 7: 11 – 17

As we’ve often heard, “The deepest wounds are not the ones we get from knives and guns, but the ones we get from losing the ones we love.” Jesus met a widow at Nain who had just lost her only son. The world became dark when this woman lost her husband and became a widow, and her future must have seemed even bleaker when she lost her only son. Jesus, deeply moved with compassion, said to her, “Do not weep.” Then, he commanded the dead young man to rise, and “the dead man sat up and began to speak.”

Pope Francis observes that “In the Gospels, Jesus is often moved by compassion. And compassion is also the language of God.” It was this compassion that moved Jesus to demonstrate his power over death for the first time, affirming his divinity and might. Every day, Jesus gives hope to many who feel life is unfair. In Nigeria, a common expression says, “This life no balance,” which reflects how unjust life can seem. The greatest miracle Jesus performs today is raising those who are spiritually dead, bringing life to lifeless marriages, restoring hope to the hopeless, uplifting those in depression, and wiping the tears of those who mourn.

We can participate in Jesus’ ministry by consoling and comforting people in distress, sorrow, and grief. Like Jesus, can we also accompany our compassion with positive action?
