25TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE.”

God blesses us immensely in Christ Jesus, the light and life of God in us. Today, the Lord urges us to keep that light burning and shining brightly. No one or nothing must extinguish it. King Cyrus, in today’s first reading, exemplifies Jesus’ demand. God chooses and uses anyone He wishes as an instrument with which to do his work.

Cyrus was neither Israelite nor Jewish. He was Persian. But, God chose him, not only as an instrument to bring Judah back from exile, but also, to build a befitting temple for the God of Israel. He also allowed and actively enabled the Israelites to practice their religion freely. He cooperated fully and willingly with God to accomplish God’s plan. He allowed God’s light of mercy, kindness and freedom to shine through him. You too are God’s chosen instrument, called to co-operate with God’s plan and to let the light of God’s gracious love shine through you. Where are today’s Cyruses? We need them in a broken and darkened world; whose darkness has penetrated people, families, communities and global entities. In that world, Christ has inserted us through our baptism and our relationship with him as brothers, sisters and God’s children, demanding that we bring his light to infuse that world with healing, strength, brightness, joy and God’s spirit. The more light we shed, the more illuminated we become with God’s grace. Be counted in; Each person should therefore dig deep into his/her resources and the gifts/talents that God has given to us and shed light wherever we are, to dissipate the darkness in our world. And please pray for the protection of the right to religious freedom everywhere and for mutual co-existence amongst God’s children.
Jesus, light of the world, let your light shine in and through us to the world around us. Amen.
