25TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority…”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Prov 30:5-9; Psalm 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163; Luke 9:1-6
Jesus sent his disciples out on mission, with instructions to carry nothing with them but to rely on the hospitality and kindness of those, amongst God’s people, who welcome them. The only provisions they were to take with them were the power and authority, given by Christ, over demons, unclean spirits, diseases, and a mandate to proclaim the good news of the kingdom. The same mandate is given to us today to work for the healing and restoration of our broken and evil ridden world. God is always with us and continues to rely on us to take full advantage of Christ’s power and authority, as we fulfil the mandate to proclaim the good news.

We must remember always that the power and authority are Christ’s and not our personal priced possessions, and so must constantly rely on Christ, even as our personal importance in that mission recedes to the background. Christ first; then we follow where he leads. Such reliance on Christ is a humble submission to God’s bidding. The first reading highlights the importance of fidelity to the message given by Jesus to the disciples (to us) for dissemination. It is not to be corrupted, diminished or embellished arbitrarily. Also, the faithful messenger is reassured of God’s loving care in that reading, for, “Every word of God is tested;” and “he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”
Lord, in your mercy and compassion, bless the bearers of the good news of salvation; heal and restore our world through their ministry. Amen.
