26TH THURSDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: MISSIONARIES OF PEACE

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

Lk 10:1-12

Ralph Bunche, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, once said, “If you want to get across an idea, wrap it in a person.” Long before Bunche, Jesus embodied His idea of peace in 70 individuals whom He selected and sent out as missionaries of peace. He instructed them, “Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs amid wolves” (Luke 10:3). With these words, Jesus was warning them that they would be surrounded by wolves, or violent people, in the world. However, they were to be meek, living like lambs, avoiding violence, trouble, and conflicts.

As missionaries of peace, they were called to heal broken families, unite divided communities, preach the message of peace, and bring reconciliation to those wounded and traumatized by conflicts. Jesus emphasized this mission when He instructed them, “Heal the sick… and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you'” (Luke 10:9).

Similarly, all followers of Jesus are called to be missionaries of peace and harmony in their societies. By sending out the 70, Jesus demonstrated that the mission of peace is not limited to ordained ministers but extends to anyone willing to share in this important task. How committed are we to proclaiming and living a peaceful life?
