26TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: THEY LOVE US, THEY PROTECT US

Job 38: 1 – 40: 5, Lk 10: 13 – 16

According to Church doctrine, each person is born with a guardian angel. St. Basil the Great declared, “Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd, leading him to life.” Guardian angels are also present in our human communities; in a figurative sense, the angels within our communities serve as our guardian angels. For instance, the Church acknowledges St. Michael as the guardian angel of the Church and refers to him as the angel of Israel (Dan. 12:1). Similarly, the angel who appeared to the children at Fatima in 1916 introduced himself as “the angel of Portugal,” signifying his role as their nation’s protector. On this feast day, we can celebrate not only our own guardian angels but also the guardians of our communities.

Let us reflect on the following roles of our guardian angels in our lives as children of God:

1. Protection and Guidance: Their primary function, according to Catholic doctrine, is to guard and direct us.
2. Keeping Us Close to God: They assist in keeping us away from evil and near to God, remaining by our sides at all times to watch over us.
3. Wisdom in Decision-Making: Angels help us make wise decisions, providing calm wisdom when we face difficult choices.
4. Safety from Danger: Guardian angels keep us safe from physical and spiritual dangers.
5. Protection Against Temptation: They protect us from temptations and influences that could harm our souls.
6. Intercession: Guardian angels intercede for us, presenting our needs to God. Even when we forget to pray, our guardian angel prays for us.
7. Concern for Our Well-Being: They are continually concerned about our well-being and desire for us to attain heaven.

In summary, guardian angels are present to assist us as we navigate life. They never cease to care for us and strive for our betterment. God has sent these devoted angels to remain with us always.

Let us constantly invoke our guardian angels, as we need their help throughout our lives.
