27TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: SEEING GOOD IN OTHERS

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

Gal 3: 7 – 14, Lk 11: 15 – 26.

“When you choose to see the good in others, you end up finding the good in yourself,” says an unknown author. When Jesus drove a demon out of a man who was mute, many were amazed, but some critics accused Him, saying, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.” These critics hastily jumped to conclusions, failing to discern between good and evil. Their closed, hardened, and prejudiced minds refused to judge Jesus’ actions with an open heart.

Jesus questioned them, “If Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?” He continued, “But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Luke 11:18, 20). Jesus highlighted their error and invited them to recognize God’s presence rather than be consumed by fault-finding.

Often, we too fall into the trap of judging and condemning others based on limited knowledge. We speak poorly of people without truly knowing them, jumping to conclusions without sufficient facts. Sometimes, our biases prevent us from seeing any good in those we dislike.

Are we more concerned with picking faults than recognizing the grace of God at work in the people around us?
