27TH MONDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
27TH MONDAY HOMILY IN THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “GO AND DO THE SAME YOURSELF.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Jonah 1:1–2:1, 11; Psalm (Jonah 2:3-5, 8); Luke 10:25-37
Jesus challenges us today to move from our comfort zones and be active and faithful disciples. We will not always be pleased or happy with what God is asking of us, just like the Prophet Jonah, but once God has demanded, we are bound by obedience.

Like we have in the gospel reading, we are used to turning the other way or blindfolding our eyes and pretending to be blind to the plight of those around us, quite often because we think they are different from us and do not belong to the class of people with whom we should associate. We must not forget our common humanity and the dignity that we have, not only as God’s children, but also as brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, made so by the divine humility that manifested itself in the mystery of the Incarnation. Through Jesus’ self-emptying, we gained life. Christ invites us to empty ourselves of all the earthly treasures that we hold on to so dearly in order to completely surrender to God and pour out God’s love to those around us. We must live our lives in prayer and charity; in the service of the poor and needy. “You go and do the same” is an invitation to go on seeking the path of humble and selfless service to God and others; that is where true joy is to be found.
Lord, make me an instrument of your unconditional love and peace. Amen.
