To balance prayer and work is to have heaven in your heart and bread on your table. St. Augustine describes God as “Semper agens, semper quietus,” which means One who is always acting, always at rest (effective and calm). This description of God is often used to convey the idea of finding a balance between the active and contemplative aspects of life.

As people who are always active (*semper agens*), we engage in daily activities, fulfil responsibilities, serve others, and make a positive impact on the world. As contemplatives (*semper quietus*), we seek stillness, reflection, and inner peace. It signifies the importance of taking time for prayer, meditation, self-reflection, and spiritual growth. In essence, “Semper agens, semper quietus” underscores the idea that a well-rounded and fulfilling life involves harmonising the active and contemplative aspects of one’s existence, ultimately leading to personal growth and spiritual depth.
St. Luke narrates how Martha and Mary encountered Jesus and were excited to have him stay with them. Fr. Munachi E. Ezeogu explains, “The point of the story of Jesus with Mary and Martha is not to invite us to choose between being a Martha or a Mary. A true disciple of Jesus needs to be both Martha and Mary. The point of the story is to challenge our priorities so that we come to see that fellowship with the Lord, being with the Lord, and hearing his word should always precede the work we do for the Lord.” How balanced is our spirituality? Do our religious activities overshadow our relationship with God?
