28TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: THE LEAVEN OF PHARISEES
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
Many religious people struggle to align their beliefs with daily life, which contributes to the moral crisis in our world today. C.S. Lewis reflects on this disconnect, stating, “I believe there are too many practitioners in the church who are not believers.” Centuries ago, Jesus warned the multitude, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy” (Luke 12:1). The word “leaven” comes from the Latin levamen, meaning to raise up. Just as yeast raises bread, leaven symbolizes influence.

When Jesus used “leaven” to describe the Pharisees, He warned against their brand of religion, marked by legalism and external appearances. The Pharisees, whose actions contradicted their teachings, became obstacles to the faith of others. St. James also cautions against hypocrisy, stating that “the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity” (James 3:17).
