28TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
28TH FRIDAY HOMILY OF THE ORDINARY TIME: YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “Abraham put his faith in God, and this faith was considered as justifying him.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Romans 4:1-8, Ps. 32:1-2,5,11, Luke 12:1-7
Paul’s recourse to the exemplary faith of Abraham in promptly responding to God’s demands establishes the primacy of faith in the believer’s life. From faith flow our good works (charity) and hope. By themselves, good deeds have just earthly values as they only guarantee what is due.

Eternal life is, however, not purchasable by what we do. Rather, it is a gift that is granted freely by God to us in response to our faith and trust in Him. But, faith and trust do not just exist of themselves; they bear fruits; the fruits of charity and good works. Without their fruits, they are ineffective. In today’s gospel, Christ urges us to shun false teachings and deception, even under the pain of death. We must therefore not live in fear under the treachery of evil people, who cannot hurt our soul, as God assures us that we are His precious children and under his protection. Amidst our struggles in life, it is only a vision of life that looks beyond this world to the gift of eternal life that can have a good understand of this call to be bold and fearless in the face of terror and oppression. To live in fear is to imprison ourselves. Only God deserves our reverential fear; he alone can cast both body and soul into hell. The same God urges us: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body….”
Loving and All-Powerful God, shepherd us beyond our wants, beyond our fears, from death into life. Amen.
