28TH THURSDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: PERSECUTION OF PROPHETS

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

LUKE 11:47-54

St. Augustine said, “The greatest kindness one can render to any man is leading him to the truth.” Jesus aimed to lead the Pharisees to the truth. He warned them, “Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. So you are witnesses and consent to the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs” (Luke 11:47-48). The Pharisees refused to acknowledge their failures, rejected the truth, and resisted correction, even celebrating the prophets they once persecuted by building grand tombs and monuments.

Like the Pharisees, we sometimes become resistant to the voices of truth, preferring to attack or condemn those who challenge us. True prophets act as mirrors, revealing our faults, but those who despise the truth may seek to destroy both the mirror and its holder instead of making changes.

Anyone who speaks the truth boldly will likely face opposition and persecution. Am I among those who stand for truth, or do I side with those who resist it? Do I support what is true, right, and just, or am I among those who silence the voices of truth?
