29TH FRIDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: SIGNS OF THE TIME
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
The proverb “Read the writing on the wall” reminds us to pay attention to the signs and signals that indicate impending change or events. George Orwell’s classic novel 1984, published in 1949, serves as a wake-up call for readers, urging them to observe the signs of their times. The novel portrays a government acting as “Big Brother,” monitoring its citizens’ every move, a scenario that resonates strongly in our modern age of digital technology, social media, CCTV surveillance, and data tracking. Orwell also highlights the manipulation of information, distortion of facts, and the rise of fake news—factors that are equally prevalent today.

In response to such societal shifts, the novel calls for vigilance and critical thinking. Similarly, Jesus urges His listeners to interpret not just nature but the spiritual and moral conditions of their time. He says, “You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?” (Luke 12:56). What good is it to accurately predict the weather if we are blind, indifferent, and insensitive to the messianic era and the presence of God in our midst? While we pay attention to geography, weather, and natural sciences, should we not also strive to discern the spiritual and moral signs of our times?
