29TH MONDAY HOMILY OF ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

HOMILY THEME: GUARD AGAINST GREED

BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa

Ephesians 2:1-10; Psalm 99(100); Luke 12:13-21

Jesus warns his disciples against vainglory and greed, saying, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions” (Luke 12:15). To illustrate this, He tells the parable of the “Rich Fool,” who accumulated wealth and planned to expand his barns but died before realizing his project (Luke 12:16-20). Jesus concludes, “Thus will it be for those who store up treasures for themselves and are not rich in matters of God” (Luke 12:21).

It is not sinful to be rich or expand wealth, but the Rich Fool’s sin was one of omission—neglecting charitable deeds. He excluded the poor, marginalized, orphans, widows, and the sick from his plans. His possessions became obsessions, placing material wealth over the value of charity. His self-centeredness, ambition, and greed blinded him to the importance of using his wealth for good. He enjoyed life’s gifts while forgetting the Giver.

Can we resolve today to use what we have to glorify God and serve others?
