29TH WEDNESDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: CONSISTENT EFFORT
BY: Bishop Gerald M Musa
A preacher once said, “Be ready for the sudden surprise visits of God. A ready person never needs to get ready.” There is a story about a school inspector who challenged students to keep their desks tidy, promising a reward for the neatest desk. Initially, the students were enthusiastic, but over time, many lost interest—except for one girl who maintained her desk with consistent effort. When the inspector returned unannounced, her desk was immaculate, and she was rewarded with cash and gifts. This story highlights the value of consistent effort and faith despite uncertainty, showing how unwavering dedication leads to rewards.

The students’ initial excitement followed by a drop in interest mirrors how people often lose focus on long-term commitments. The one girl who stayed diligent, despite mockery, symbolizes strong faith and dedication. When the unexpected moment arrived, her readiness and faithfulness were rewarded.
Similarly, Jesus expects His followers to be diligent in their tasks and to keep their hearts pure as they await His return. He warns, “The Son of Man will come when you least expect him” (Luke 12:46). A faithful and wise steward, according to Jesus, is one who stays committed to the Master’s instructions and is never caught off guard. A true disciple of Christ is never frightened by end-time prophecies, but remains ready to give a good account of their stewardship.
