2ND MONDAY HOMILY IN LENT — YEAR A

HOMILY THEME: THE GREAT CATCH!

BY: Fr. Benedict AGBO

1 Peter 4:7b-11; Luke 5:1-11

Jesus oversees our successes and failures; our nights of toiling and our days of weariness. He knows when we have asked for a favour and exhausted our prayer stamina. He knows when we are experiencing terrible set backs in business, delays in promotion and all forms of obstacles towards our prosperity. In today’s gospel, we are told that Peter, when wearied from a night of fruitless toil nonetheless pressed Jesus to teach them from his boat. And when his Word of command came, he let down the nets deeper and enclosed a great shoal of fish. Yes the Word of God assures us that though crying and sorrow endures through the night, but joy comes in the morning, Ps 32: 5. When we grow in his Word and cooperate with his will he accomplishes in us feats infinitely more than we can ask or imagine, Eph 3: 20.

His Word says: ‘Seek 1st the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things shall be added’. Seeking for prosperity or progress in our business is not wrong but our priorities must be set right. We must hear the Word of God first. Catching fish and catching men are not inversely proportional, neither are they directly proportional. But Christ wants to make us first to be catchers (fishers) of men not fish. Our vocation must be realized before our profession /occupation. He provides the fish after we have caught the men who will eat the fish. If He didn’t secure Peter’s faith, perhaps he would have ended up a successful fisherman than a successful fisher of men. He makes us rich after he has made us, first of all his bona fide children. Prosperity of children of God is divine prosperity – lasting prosperity where the secrets of love and sharing has been unearthed and earth becomes like heaven. May God bless you today!
