2ND SUNDAY HOMILY IN LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: BECOMING AN AGENT OF TRANSFORMATION
BY: Fr. Isaac Awe
Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 9:28-36
The greatest fraud in life is religion without character (Isaiah 29:13)
Each gives what he /she has
By their fruits we shall know them (Matthew 7:20)
In all sincerity, what do we have inside of us? Hate or love, violence or peace, death or life, capacity to build or to destroy? What have we acquired over the years? Team spirit or pull down spirit?
Let us remember: each gives what he /she has.
Dust we are, dust we shall return!
“Had they wisdom, they would have understood this, they would have sensed the end awaiting them” (Deuteronomy 32:29)
The testimony of our lives is what will draw or repel others to the lord or from the lord. It is all done without we saying a word.
We can be sure that the disciples probably didn’t know exactly what to make of the transfiguration that night. It was real but at the same time, they hadn’t quite figured it out. However, the truth is that Jesus was transfigured on the high mountain. It was he who started to shine. While Jesus shone, everything around him picked up that shine; the grass, the mountain and their tops, the birds and the insects, Peter, James and John. A voice was heard. The voice said: “Listen to him ,” do what he suggests, change yourself according to his model, according to his spirit, and all the rest will follow. In this way, Jesus made it clear to his disciples, what would happen to this world if we , his disciples, change and start to shine.

As Jesus was transformed on the mountain, the disciples Peter, James and John were also changed by Jesus. They were determined to follow Jesus despite the hardships that would come. Peter was martyred, James was killed by Herod and John was imprisoned into his old age. They were willing to sacrifice their lives for the gospel because they were transformed by Jesus. Will we allow the same truth to transform us and give us courage to be witnesses for Jesus?
It is clearly stated in today’s gospel reading that Peter, James, and John were asleep! Upon awakening they discovered the transfiguration of Jesus along with Moses and Elijah. How much do we miss of God’s glory and action because we are asleep spiritually? There are many things which can keep our minds asleep to the things of God: Mental lethargy and the “unexamined life” can keep us from thinking things through and facing our doubts and questions. The life of ease can also hinder us from considering the challenging or disturbing demands of Christ. Prejudice can make us blind to something new the Lord may have for us. Even sorrow can be a block until we can see past it to the glory of God. Are we spiritually awake? Peter, James, and John were privileged witnesses of the glory of Christ. We, too, as disciples of Christ are called to be witnesses of his glory. The Lord wants to reveal his glory to us, his beloved disciples. Do we seek his presence with faith and reverence?
Reflection: To have a better world , it begins from self!
PRAYER: Lord, keep us always alert and awake to you, to your word, your action, and your daily presence in our lives. Let us see your glory. Amen
