2ND SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE LENT — YEAR C

2ND SUNDAY HOMILY OF THE LENT — YEAR C
HOMILY THEME: “THIS IS MY CHOSEN SON; LISTEN TO HIM.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18; Psalm 27; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 9:28-36
On this second Sunday of Lent, we hear Luke’s version of the Transfiguration. As is characteristic of Luke, Jesus was in prayer (communing with the Father) when he was transfigured. For Jesus, the event became a source of reassurance at the crucifixion. Communion with the Father, which was given expression in the Transfiguration, reminded him of his ultimate destiny.

For the disciples, the experience will strengthen their faith amidst the difficulties of seeing their Lord and teacher crucified. More importantly though is the revelation of Jesus’ divine Sonship and the command from above: “Listen to him.” Like them, our lives must be spent in total obedience to Jesus, listening to him in every situation and circumstance. That is how we sustain our heavenly citizenship and also get to experience our own transfiguration through the gift of risen life, when our lowly bodies will be transformed into copies of his own glorious body. Not listening to that voice and living disobediently is a rebellion and tantamount to being “enemies of the Cross of Christ,” the consequence of which is self-destruction. The inheritance promised to Abraham’s descendants in the first reading is ours, when after we have spent our lives in communion with Christ through prayer and the obedience of faith, we are admitted into God’s eternal kingdom in the life to come.
Lord, bend my heart to your will. Amen.
