2ND TUESDAY HOMILY OF THE ADVENT — YEAR A
2ND TUESDAY HOMILY OF THE ADVENT — YEAR A
HOMILY THEME: “CONSOLE MY PEOPLE, CONSOLE THEM.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Isaiah 40:1-11, Ps. 96:1-3,10-13, Matthew 18:12-14
These introductory words of today’s first reading came from the Lord to Israel at a time when they had lost hope, but God promised restoration, and called her to repentance and communion with her God again. So, Israel had to come to terms with the nothingness of human life and all the other securities that humans cling to instead of God. Such securities are like grass and wither in no time. The Lord alone is a sure source of hope and restoration; he forgives even after crushing humans for their sinfulness and rebellion, and nourishes His flock anew.

That call for repentance and communion with God remains the focus of Advent for us today. Our world is just as distressed now as it was in the time of Isaiah, besieged by powerful and evil anti-God and anti-human dignity forces. Let us prepare a way for the Lord into our lives and into our communities and world anew. Let us make his paths straight by changing (turning away from) our wayward ways and drawing closer to our God. Such a journey of repentance ends in joy because the initiative is God’s, to start with, as the gospel points out. God does not will the death of the sinner. Each return is met with wholeness and joy from God. The first level of our preparation during Advent season is usually personal; ensuring that we are at right with God and experience true communion. It is only when we have accomplished this that we become properly disposed to the second level, which involves a selfless outreach to others, especially the underprivileged. May God lead us on the path of interior conversion and renewal, so that our fortunes may be completely restored.
Lord, forgive us our sins; bring us back to you; console and renew us with the joy of healing and forgiveness. Amen.
