30TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B

30TH MONDAY HOMILY IN ORDINARY TIME — YEAR B
HOMILY THEME: “YOU ARE CITIZENS… OF GOD’S HOUSEHOLD.”
BY: Bishop Anthony Ewherido
Eph 2:19-22; Psalm 18(19):2-5; Luke 6:12-16
As we celebrate Saints Simon and Jude, two of Jesus’ first disciples, who were among those chosen as apostles after Jesus’ long night of prayer, the first reading notes that, with them, we are family, members of the body of Christ. We celebrate them because they worked tirelessly to spread the good news and gave their lives for the gospel. They were foundation members of a community and we are part of the building to which they are foundational.

As building blocks then, we must play our part to preserve the great legacy of these brothers of ours, by taking up our full roles as members of Christ’s Body, the Church. As we know, the list did not end with the special twelve. They are the nucleus upon which a longer list is developed and continues to grow of men and women disciples of the Lord Jesus, who must continue the work of bringing the good news to all creation as witness of the living presence of Christ, the full expression of God’s love for humanity. All the baptized are listed, except those who choose to delist themselves like Judas Iscariot did. With Christ, our cornerstone, at the lead, we must continue to work for the growth and sanctification of God’s household, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Again, the mission field to which the Church is sent is vast, yet very much around us. We must engage the world around us on that note, bring Christ to it in order to transform and heal it, and patiently but determinatively permeate it with the yeast of the gospel. St. Jude is honored as the patron of difficult cases. We commit the resistance of our world to the good news to his intercession even as we ask for his help in the difficult situations in which we find ourselves from time to time.
Lord, hear and answer the prayers of your faithful servants and saints for us. Amen.
