HOMILY THEME: SELECTING WORKERS

Eph 2:19-22; Psalm 18(19):2-5; Luke 6:12-16

When hiring, employers often outline job descriptions, review resumes, conduct interviews, and check references to choose the right candidate. They assess cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and team compatibility. Similarly, Jesus chose His 12 Apostles, including Simon and Jude, with deliberate intention.

Today, some may question Jesus’ choices; a modern selection committee might disqualify certain Apostles based on their varied backgrounds, like Matthew the tax collector and the impulsive Peter. However, this diversity demonstrates how God often selects unlikely individuals for impactful roles. Scripture tells us that God uses those considered insignificant to challenge social norms (1 Corinthians 1:28). Jesus’ selection process wasn’t random; He prayed all night for divine guidance, emphasizing the importance of prayer before making decisions.

We can draw inspiration from the Apostles’ faithful response to Jesus’ call. Their example urges us to prepare for our own missions through prayer and discernment. As we reflect on how Jesus carefully chose His Apostles, let us open our hearts and minds to recognize the unique ways God may be calling us to serve in our own lives.
